MAKE OR DO

DO OR MAKE

Explanation

Make or Do

In English, we often put two words together simply because it 'sounds right'. Often, there are no rules for this. It is just what native English speakers say and how the language has developed over many years. We call this "collocation". In other words, the verb make goes with some words and the verb do with other words.

  • We made an agreement (not did an agreement)
  • I did my homework (not made my homework)

So what can you do to help you learn which words go with make and which words go with do?

The best solution is to try and memorize words that go with make and words that go with do. You could make two lists in your vocabulary book and then refer to them when you are not sure. If you read and listen to English a lot you will slowly become more familiar with lots of these expressions and learn new ones.

Apart from this, there are some very general rules for make and do that can help you:

Do is used

1. to describe an action without saying exactly what the action is:

  • I'm going to do something that you won't believe!
  • We did some things around the house at the weekend.

2.  to talk about work and jobs:

  • I didn't do any work today.
  • My mother usually does the housework during the week, but my father does most of the chores at the weekend.
  • Have you done your homework?

Some words that go with do:

Do the washing, ironing, cooking, etc

Do your best

Do the housework

Do the shopping

Do your nails and hair

Do business

Do (household) chores

Do someone harm

Do sports

Do someone a favour

Do your duty

Make is used

1. to speak about building, constructing, producing, creating etc.
